Kunming - The Spring City
The provincial capital Kunming is situated in the heart of Yunnan. Sharing borders with Tibet, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar, Yunnan is one of the most central bases for tourism in South-East Asia. Because of its location, Kunming is one of the most attractive places for exploring Chinese culture. Yes, Beijing is the capital of China and yes, Shanghai is the business center of China - but if you want to find some more unique culture, customs and food, then staying with Homestay China in Kunming will be your best choice. Yunnan and Southwest China in general has a high concentration of Chinese minority cultures, all kinds of different food flavors and a wide variety of natural scenic spots.
Kunming is one of the fastest growing cities in China. In July 2012 it has opened the first terminal of China’s 4th largest airport. To get there you can take Kunming’s new metro line. In the next few years a complete metro network throughout the whole city will make traffic more convenient. On the other hand, Kunming is growing sustainably and not as fast as Shenzhen or other Chinese special economic zones. For that reason, many Chinese and foreigners who are looking for a place to relax and enjoy nature, Kunming is one of the best locations to satisfy their demand.
Homestay China invites all Homestay students to become part of this laid-back and friendly Southwestern Chinese city. Going for a walk at the Green Lake and having a cup of tea or enjoying a bowl of the traditional Bridge Rice Noodle can send you back in an old, traditional Chinese era. Walking on Wenlin Street, on the other hand, can give you an impression how Western style and food can influence a city in a very modest but artistic way. The Golden Horse Archway represents the gate to the city center. The center is very small and well-organized and you can find modern as well as old Chinese traditional architecture.
Try to find Kunming's old town and search for the best beef barbecue in town. Once you reach a tiny alley, you can see a queue of many Chinese locals and smell the sense of nicely barbecued meat, then you are at the right address. Do you hate freezing cold winters but also can't get used to the heat of hot summers? Kunming welcomes you on an elevation of ca. 1900 meters above sea level. It has one of the mildest climates in China, in summer the average temperature highs around 24°C and in winterit highs around 15°C. Hence, the weather never gets really hot in summer and you won't be freezing in winter. A beautiful vegetation with colorful blossoms shows that it is "always" spring in Kunming.
Even though Kunming is one of the "smaller" cities in China (5.7 million inhabitants), it still has no lack of Western standards and attractions. Locals as well as foreigners like to go shopping in one of the city's big malls. Having a vast number of cafes, tea houses and restaurants Kunming creates a typical atmosphere of a modern Chinese city.
For people who would like to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Kunming offers a great variety of different activities. Indoor sports such as bowling, tennis, squash, swimming or outdoor adventures like hiking, climbing, mountain biking will keep your body in motion. For those who would like to explore more of Yunnan's unique culture, Homestay China or your host family can help you to arrange trips to Dali, Lijiang, Luoping, Xishuangbanna or other fabulous places.
